  • I picked up this book last October and my initial impression was less than stellar. It appeared pretty basic and at the time I was shooting very regularly because the weather was still good. I figured live fire was way better than dry fire, so this book got pushed aside. Then as the live fire became less and less frequent, and as I was really not looking forward to more days shooting outdoors in single digit temps (yes, I spent an hour long session shooting on a 6 degree day, it sucked) I realized I still needed to train. Time to get back to serious dry fire.

    So I picked up this book again and decided I was going to give it a serious try and see what it had to offer. I am very glad I did. Since I had just started using the "Max Michel Shot Coach" app which lets me video my shooting and then allows me to go through it to look for areas of improvement, I decided I was going to go through a handful of stages in this book, on video, then check back later to see if there was improvement. Since the Shot Coach lets me edit and even run through the video frame by frame, I could easily see my times and where I needed improvement. But the biggest surprise came after practicing daily for a couple of months, then comparing it to the videos I shot at the beginning. It looked like a different person shooting! The improvement was dramatic.

    Dry fire is an excellent way to improve. By going through a process hundreds or even thousands of times, you are developing muscle memory. Your draw, acquiring sight picture, and movements need to be habit so when you are standing in the box at a match waiting for the beep, you can be mindless and just let things flow. I feel so much smoother now when I hear the beep. I am not thinking about the mechanics of my draw because it is now ingrained, that leaves my mind free to just go through the stage.

    I think this book can help any aspiring shooter that wants to improve. There are many drills in this book. Yes, some seem basic, but they cover basic skills that you must master before you move on to harder skills. In reality even the hardest skill is built off of the basic skills. You must build the foundation before you try to build on top of it. Your basic skills must be consistently perfect before you advance to the highest levels of our sport.

    This book covers many important skills you will need. Drawing, sight acquisition, transitions, moving, etc. Once you have gone through it a few times put some thought into each action and see and understand what you are doing and where you can become smoother. You need to put in the effort too. One thing the book did not cover (I understand it cannot cover everything) was details about moving into or out of a box. Foot placement is important especially when you are at the far left side of a box, leaning left around a barricade taking a shot and then have to move to the right. You need to step outside the box to the left to quickly push of into the right direction. That will save time. Also when you are entering a box you need to have your sight picture and grip as you are stepping into the box so you can take the shot as soon as your feet are in the box.

    Overall I feel this is a valuable training tool that has improved my shooting.
  • I loved the first volume and feel equally so about the 2nd. This is the book where you commit to the Practical Shooting lifestyle - where your family doesn't mind hearing timer beeps, seeing you running around with your competition gear on, hearing click click click, and where walls in your basement have mini-IPSC targets tape all over them.

    But if you do commit, even partially to the lifestyle, you will get better. Dramatically. Just the initial White Wall Marksmanship Fundamentals, if done faithfully, will make the typical shooter/competitor significantly better than before.

    The authors do what's in the book. You can too, and it's up to you how much you want to invest and how much better you want to be.

    These two books are what I give my promising students now. It's up to them to offer the commitment the book seeks.
  • this is def the book I needed to step up my training program. I am very impressed with the simple yet VERY challenging drills. The beauty of the drills contained in this book are they list different goal times to work towards, it's humbling to say, "yeah I got this" and the par timer go off while you are still working the drill. I have had several "ah HAH!" moments while performing these drills which has caused me to reevaluate some of my techniques. I have been reccomending it to several of my shooting friends and telling them if they be impressed. The only way this book wouldn't help you is if you don't read it!

  • This is a great book, helpful to all levels of shooter, well written and set out. I refer to this often as I change up my dryfire routine. Ben is an awesome shooter and his book is somewhat unique and definitely fulfills a need within the USPSA shooting community. I highly recommend this book!
  • Unlike other dryfire books that focus on classifiers, this book will improve your overall match performance.  Ben breaks down each drill, explains his rationale, and details which part of the game it will improve.  He also provides times as guidlines to strive for.  Like his other books, this one goes beyond the basics.  His drills cover almost everything that you will encounter in a match.  Each exercise can be used alone to isolate individual skills or combined to create mini stages and link skills together.  Again, there are goal times listed to give you an idea of where you stand and what is reasonable to strive for. This is a great book and if you put in the effort, you will get better.
  • Its a good read. I am going to purchase a few targets that react to the SIRT laser, then set up targets as described. Its like anything else, a bit of reading, putting into practice with a slow progression. I would recommend the book, to help understanding the engagement process.
  • Drills and expectation levels help organize drill fry exercise.
    Easy to follow. Well done. Recommend to someone trying to improve their competitive shooting skills.
