• First of all, if you study this book and learn everything it has to say, you will pass the A-plus. If you order and study ANY of the A-plus exam guides you will pass the A-plus. You will not ACE the A-plus from this book. As near as I can tell, there is no study guide that will help you ACE the A-plus. If you want to do that you have to buy several study guides and study them all, as well as check out the assistance available on the web. However, this is a big, heavy expensive book and I expected more of it. What it does do - it will teach you how a PC works, how to build one, what the options are, how to fix one. As far as core hardware, this book is guilty of giving you far more information than you need for the exam. Its good for a real world repair guide and reference, but it may overload the entry level technician with just too much information. What it doesn't do - It hasn't been updated for the Windows 2000 focus of the new A-plus exam. It mentions Windows 2000 when it can, but clearly as last minute updates as it was going to press. Its woefully inadequate about this operating system. It is also out of date in many other areas of lesser importance but which still could cost test points (for example - it states that Novell NetWare does not support IP protocols - this information is about four years out of date). It also makes statements about Windows 95/98/NT/2000 that are just incorrect, just wrong. Its clear that the authors are less knowledgeable about operating system software than they are about PC hardware. The last disappointment is the self-testing CD included with the book. The testing program has had the guts ripped out of it, but for a substantial fee you can obtain the secret code to restore it to full functionality. Its of very little value and follows the technical errors made in the text. Again, the book does have enough correct information to get you through the A-plus exams with a passing grade. But a number of other books found on do the same thing at lower cost.
• I just got CompTIA A+ Certified. I passed the OS Exam this morning, with a score of 772, the exam stopped at the 24th question. This book, once again, had helped me a lot in passing the exam. I found some mistakes on some chapters, both on the lessons and the practice questions, but they are obvious and you will be able to figure out which is correct. The PrepLogic Practice Tests are helpful too, even though they are only the Preview Editions. I also have a little experience troubleshooting PCs and i think that helped me too in passing the exam. This book covers all the objectives in detail. I find myself looking at the objectives foldout on the first part of the book, on how many chapters i have left to study. I went to a local store yesterday and browsed on other books that i could find for A+ and Network+, and saw a lot of Sybex books. They seem ok for me, has more pictures of stuff, but when i looked into the objectives list, various chapters cover various domains, which i did not like, i don't know if those books are good, but i know THIS book was really helpful... most books that I found for A+ are already for the new exam coming out, 220-301 and 220-302 i think, Sept 12 will be the change date to the linear (non-adaptive) exams, which has i think 72 questions, including 2003 objectives questions, but does not count to the score till november 2003. • I used this book to help me pass both the A+ Core Hardware and A+ OS Technology Exams. The book is full of helpful advice on what areas to concentrate on for the exams. However, do not expect to pass the exams by using only this book. I am not sure if there is any one source that you can study that will do that. I used this text, in conjunction with some online study guides that I had bought. I also had access to my local technical college's library of A+ training videos. In my humble opinion, the training vides were the single best resource I had used. The textbook was more of a source for deeper knowledge.
  I am currently studying to complete my MCSE. My instructor adviced me to get my A+ certification to help increase my future value in the job market. Right now, I work as a sheet metal fabricator in an industrial setting in order to pay the bills. Hopefully, it will not be too long until I can finally enter the IT field. If you are in the same situation, working while pursuing certification, perhaps it would not be realistic to expect you to read this book from cover to cover. I certainly did not. However, to me, it's main value was as a source of additional clarification. In short, I would not depend on one source to help me pass any technical exam.
  I do agree with one reviewer who was turned off by the fact that additional exam prep questions were only for those willing to pay extra. In my humble opinion, those additional materials should have been included with the text. However, the exam questions on the CD that came with the text were very helpful.
• With the help of this book I passed the A+ Core hardware today with a score of 799. The content is delivered in an easy-to-read, engaging format and the chapters kept my interest. The book covered everything that was on the exam. I like the end of chapter review questions - these helped to solidify the material that I read in the chapters. There were a few typographical errors as well as a chapter where the figures for the review questions were not numbered properly. However, this did not diminish the effectiveness of the book. It was worth the money and I'm glad I bought it. Use this book + measureup questions and you will definitely pass your A+ exams.
• The book is comprehensive, but I am surprised it leaves out any mention of SATA or any of the new bus connectors. SATA is almost six years old and there is no mention of it in this volume published in 2003. I guess Serial ATA 1.0 was introduced in 2003 and it missed this publication. PCI Express is also missed, but then again the publication without the updates is still a good reference for the test.
