An Inordinate Fondness for Beetles is an authoritative reference in a breathtakingly beautiful volume, one that will leave every reader with a deeper understanding, appreciation, and--yes--fondness for these amazing creatures and their place in nature. In terms of numbers, beetles are the most successful creatures on earth about 350,000 species of beetles have been described since 1758. They range from tiny to gigantic, occupy sundry habitats, and eat everything--plants, animals, and their own remains. An Inordinate Fondness for Beetles provides an engaging look at these magnificent yet poorly understood creatures and highlights the absolutely essential role they play in the dynamics of nearly every terrestrial ecosystem on Earth. And, as this book beautifully demonstrates, the aesthetics of beetle design are amazing. The fantastic colors and shapes of these creatures warrant the gorgeous color photography lavished on them in this book.

- I’d wanted a copy of this book for years. It’s stunning. It was done with a highly developed eye for color and design.
There is a lot that could be said about it but I think one of the best comments was from a visitor who said it helped them understand why I had so many famed specimens in my study and what I saw in them. - The authors have gathered a stunning collection of photos- the type usually reserved for cursory photographic display. In contrast, the text provides suffient discussion of general insect anatomy, morphology and reproduction (amply demonstrated by specific beetles) on which to ground an introductory college entomology course. This is not to suggest the text is horridly dry... only that it delves far deeper than one might expect. Given the substance of the writing, the authors are commendably clear.
I would recommend this book to any budding entomologist, to anyone who wishes to reacquaint themselves with insects, or to anyone simply awed by the diversity of beetles... just don't expect a coffe table book. - I'm a big fan of Darwin and the Theory of Evolution. The quote that is the title of this book is one I've known about for a long time. So when I saw the book I ordered it.
Beautifully made, the photos are striking and perfect to look at and linger over. My hidden agenda for this book is for when I become a grandfather ( 3-6 years from now ). In my mind's eye I see my grandchild, eyes wide as saucers, looking at page after page of beetles and being amazed and asking LOTS of question. Nothing better in the world and it keeps us both off the internet ).
Jacob - Great price for such a great book! I only gave four stars because I ordered two copies and one was in wonderful shape while the other one was water damaged.
- This is a wonderful book for both the beginner and those more advanced. Well written text and superb pictures of this very interesting insect family.
- Got this for my husbands birthday because he was repeatedly checking out from the library, and he still loves and occasionally uses this book. It's been about a year since we bought the book.
- Love the information in this book. I keep it on the coffe table and friends always flip through and have positive comments.
- this is a wonderful book by an eminent entomologist. The photographs are superb. The text is fascinating and informative. After reading this book, you will love beetles.
