For American Claire Stewart, joining the French Resistance sounded as romantic as the storylines she hopes will one day grace the novels she wants to write. But when she finds herself stranded on English shores, with five French Jewish children she smuggled across the channel before Nazis stormed Paris, reality feels more akin to fear.

With nowhere to go, Claire throws herself on the mercy of an estranged aunt, begging Lady Miranda Langford to take the children into her magnificent estate. Heavily weighted with grief of her own, Miranda reluctantly agrees . . . if Claire will stay to help. Though desperate to return to France and the man she loves, Claire has few options. But her tumultuous upbringing―spent in the refuge of novels with fictional friends―has ill-prepared her for the daily dramas of raising children, or for the way David Campbell, a fellow American boarder, challenges her notions of love. Nor could she foresee how the tentacles of war will invade their quiet haven, threatening all who have come to call Bluebell Wood home and risking the only family she’s ever known.

Set in England’s lush and storied Lake District in the early days of World War II, and featuring cameos from beloved literary icons Beatrix Potter and C. S. Lewis, Until We Find Home is an unforgettable portrait of life on the British home front, challenging us to remember that bravery and family come in many forms.

"3.5

"You must go with them, mademoiselle . . . . They cannot go without an escort . . . . .There is no one else and there will be no more trips."

American Claire Stewart finds herself in an impossible situation, instead of simply accompanying five Jewish children to the French coast and putting them into the capable hands of a responsible escort into England, she has been forced to make the trip herself when the contact doesn't show. Once on English soil, she digs deep within her family history to recollect an estranged aunt who might possibly provide her troupe with temporary lodging. After that? She determines to return to France where her future with a most beloved man is sure to satisfy.

Lady Miranda Langford is summarily shocked when her niece, whom she has never met, arrives on the doorstep of her Lake District estate with five weary, wet, bedraggled French children. What to do? The war has forced thousands of young refugees out of Nazi infested regions and she certainly has the means to help, but is her heart ready to be around children again?

It was a bit challenging at times to discern whose story took precedence in this book, the author wove bits and pieces of many lives into her tapestry, capitalizing on various popular figures that influenced the tide of public opinion in this time period, one of which was the famed C. S. Lewis, who expertly exposed Claire's fallacious fears, so that she could discover the One who could gift her with the miracle of unconditional love."

  • I love books set in WWII times and especially if they involve the underground and/or rescuing Jews. Even though the Jewish children were rescued by the French underground there is really nothing much at all about the underground activities. This book mostly takes place in England and the care of the children during the war years. I did enjoy reading about this part of England and how the refugees were/or were not accepted. I did have a really hard time connecting with and liking the heroine. I felt she was shallow and selfish. I know the author was trying to show throughout the book why she was that way, but I got very frustrated with her not stepping up to the plate. She needed to suck it up and grow up.

I did like that this was not just another romance. I appreciated the history. I also enjoyed the reference to the many different authors and literary works, books and authors that I have enjoyed too.

Overall iy was a good read, but it is not one that I will add to my collection of WWII/Holocaust books.
  • Cathy Gohlke has written another heart-wrenching story. Filled with people who have loved and lost, people afraid to risk loving again, Cathy weaves a story of overcoming fear and being captured by love when they least expected it. The longing to be loved, the longing to belong in a family, the longing for His Love — these are His gifts to us. Claire, Miranda, David , Dr. McDonald and the children all show us the longing and the joy of longings fulfilled.
  • I preordered this book in July. My book club has read all of Cathy's books over the years. We have found her books to be beautifully written, well researched, and very engaging. This one did not disappoint.!
  • This author never disappoints. She does her research and I can't wait for her next novel. She is one of my favorites.
  • Phenomenal book! A powerful story! If you are a Cathy Gohlke fan you will not be disappointed. Wonderfully written and highly recommended..
  • The author (Cathy Gohlke) Has been writing and having her novels published for quite a few years now, and just when you think it can't get any better, it DOES! I guess that's another sign of a "Great" author! If you are not a fan of historical books, you'll still enjoy reading UNTIL WE FIND HOME. Cathy writes from going to the actually places she does the story on and you just feel you are there too! Can't wait to hear the next novel is in the making!
  • I loved the story as I always do hearing of the kindness to the Jews as they went through horrific life Situations that tore their families apart by the evil of Hitler. I'm not sure how much was facts but I would like to think there was kindness toward the Jews such as this story of love and caring. I recommend the book
